BrightTALK Gives Back: Holiday Season Volunteer Day

In BrightTALK Gives Back, Life at BrightTALK, Uncategorized

At BrightTALK, we put great emphasis on giving back to our community. Whether it’s helping those in need, beautifying local neighborhoods, or feeding the hungry, we’re always looking for opportunities to help out where we can.

With that in mind, earlier this week we took a trip to the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, where we spent a day repackaging rice to be distributed to hungry families. After a quick tour of their massive warehouse (from which they ship out 48 million pounds of food per year!), we put our hairnets on and got to work.

For our project, we had to transfer rice from a single 100-pound bag into 100 one-pound bags — and it required some real teamwork.

The assembly line started with one person scooping rice into individual bags, then passing the bags off to someone else to weigh out and make sure they were exactly one pound each. Another teammate would then use a machine to seal the bags, before passing them to the final person to add labels and box them up.

Between our two volunteer groups, we helped to repackage more than 7,600 pounds of rice. It was extremely moving to know that each of those bags would go to a family in need during the busy holiday season.

As we learned during our tour of the food bank, 25% of the population in the San Francisco Bay Area faces hunger. Spending a day at the food bank was just a small step in fighting hunger in our community but was very meaningful to our group of volunteers at BrightTALK.
